Why Health Insurance is a Non-Negotiable for Digital Nomads

Working remotely from different countries has become normal. For short-term trips of just some weeks a regular short-term travel insurance is good enough. And many seasonal nomads travel on tourist visas or the visa-exempt periods. But as soon as you are looking into more than a holiday hideaway in a nice country while having your laptop with you for occasional work you will look into Digital Nomad Visas and their requirements. Also your trip medical insurance won’t be sufficient anymore.

You will whether need a long-term travel insurance for nomads if you still have health insurance back home. Or you are a full-time nomad without a country of residency and a health insurance back home. Then you’d need to look into international health insurance plans for digital nomads that usually also meet the requirements of digital nomad visas by default.

Many countries offering digital nomad visas mandate health insurance as part of the application process. Without proof of coverage, your application will be rejected. The documents provided by your destination country describes what’s the minimum coverage level, contract duration, minimum financial limits etc. of the insurance you need to provide.

2. Financial Safety

Medical emergencies abroad can be financially crippling. Comprehensive health insurance ensures you’re covered for unexpected hospitalizations, surgeries, or even repatriation. If repatriation needs to be arranged because your insurance solution does not cover extended treatments and care for severe conditions in the country where you are then we’ll need to make sure that you have the sufficient coverage back in your home country after repatriation.

3. Peace of Mind

Whether it’s finding a local doctor or managing chronic conditions abroad, the right insurance plan gives you access to global medical networks and support. Today’s modern insurance providers come with an app that allows you to file claims easily from your mobile phone. And the good ones integrate telemedicine or even a global network of doctors and clinics where you can book appointments right away. And the billing and payment is organized directly between those medical providers and your insurance so you don’t need to deal with any claims process.

A good international health insurance is not just to tick a box in a visa application. It gives you the peace of mind that things will work once you need them.

Thailand: Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for digital nomads

Thailand is a very famous destination for digital nomads and especially seasonal remote workers who are finding an alternative to the cold winters of the Northern hemisphere. Chiang Mai in the North of Thailand has become a hot spot and the unrivaled world capital of the digital nomad community. The annual Nomad Summit there has become one of the best and biggest events for digital nomads in the world.

Islands like Koh Phangan have started to develop their own ecosystem of coworking spaces and colivings by the beach to cater the growing popularity among remote workers and digital nomads.

Thailand has introduced the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), a program tailored for digital nomads, freelancers, and remote workers seeking extended stays in the country.

Key Features of the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV):

  • Duration: Allows stays of up to 180 days per visit, with the option to extend for an additional 180 days each time. The visa itself is valid for 5 years and permits multiple entries.
  • Eligibility: Designed for digital nomads, freelancers, remote workers, and individuals involved in Thai soft power activities. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum bank balance of 500,000 THB, though specific financial requirements may vary by embassy or consulate.
  • Application Process: Applications must be submitted from outside Thailand. The process includes providing proof of financial stability, valid health insurance, and other supporting documents as required by the specific Thai embassy or consulate.
  • Health Insurance Requirement: Applicants are required to have valid health insurance coverage. The specifics of the required coverage may vary, so it’s advisable to consult with the relevant Thai embassy or consulate for detailed information.

The DTV offers a flexible and convenient option for digital nomads aiming to establish a long-term presence in Thailand, providing ample time to immerse in the local culture while maintaining their remote work commitments.

Please note that visa regulations and requirements are subject to change. It’s recommended to verify the latest information with the official Thai immigration authorities or the nearest Thai embassy or consulate before making travel arrangements.

What to Look for in a Health Insurance Plan for digital nomad visas

An international health insurance contract should not be in your pocket just to tick the box of the visa application. It’s something that you want to be able to rely on once you really need it in a situation of trouble. And a good health insurance provider adds a lot of convenience to your life when you seek medical attention in a foreign country and you get all the assistance needed with finding the right practitioner and getting an appointment quick.

1. Key Features of your nomad insurance

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Inpatient and outpatient care
  • Preventive care and vaccinations
  • Repatriation to your home country

2. Compliance with Visa Requirements

Ensure the policy meets specific coverage amounts and aligns with the visa duration. Double-check for policies tailored to the country you’re applying to.

3. Providers That Understand Nomads: An independent broker

There are many good reasons why you should purchase insurance always through an independent broker and not directly at an insurance company (or through their agents). When it comes to digital nomad insurance there are even more reasons to choose a broker company that is living a remote work culture and a nomadic lifestyle themselves:

  • Understanding the challenges like e.g. not being in the country of your passport while applying for a visa
  • Traveling not from A to B and back but from A to C via B, then to D, shortly back to C and staying in F for a while: Been there, done that. :)

Look for global insurers that cater to frequent travelers and nomads. Plans with flexibility in duration or to add dependents are a bonus.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about digital nomad visa health insurance

Can I use travel insurance instead of health insurance for my digital nomad visa?

If you have an underlying health insurance back in your home country and you add a long-term travel insurance on top of that: Yes, generally speaking that can work. Just make sure that the contract duration is long enough for your intended stay and all features match the requirements of your destination country.

What happens if my health insurance policy lapses during my stay?

A lapse in coverage could lead to visa non-compliance and potential legal or financial consequences. That’s why you need to make sure that any switch from one provider to another happens without a gap. The new coverage level must meet the criteria and requirements set out by the immigration authority.

Do I need health insurance from a local provider in the visa country, or can I use international insurance?

Most countries accept international insurance, while a few require policies from local providers. The requirements are laid out in the documents by the authorities. We will make sure that we meet them with the coverage we’ll propose to you.

What should a health insurance plan include to meet digital nomad visa requirements?

Minimum coverage amounts, specific inclusions (like repatriation or COVID-19 coverage), and geographic scope are critical for visa approval. Every country has their own set of requirements which you will learn during the application process.

Are pre-existing conditions covered under visa-compliant health insurance plans?

Digital nomads with ongoing medical needs must ensure their insurance policies provide adequate coverage for pre-existing conditions to avoid unexpected costs. If a pre-existing condition can be covered by private health insurance depends on the severity of the condition. As independent brokers we can perform anonymous pre-checks with the medical underwriters of each insurance company.

How do I prove my health insurance meets the visa requirements?

Some countries require official documentation, like a policy certificate or letter from the insurer, explicitly stating compliance with their regulations. At NOMADS.insure we have pre-screened each provider we work with. So we’ve made sure that their documents are sufficient for the visa officers to process. And if you apply for a digital nomad visa with a policy from us you will most probably be not the first client we have traveling to that country.

Can I switch health insurance providers after obtaining my digital nomad visa?

Yes, you can. We had this process several times among our clients, for example when the contract duration was insufficient as the client decided to extend and stay longer. As long as the new provider meets the criteria as well that is not a problem.

Can I cancel my health insurance if I don’t get accepted for the digital nomad visa country?

That’s a bit tricky but something we can deal with. Usually health insurance contracts have a revocation period of two weeks. But this is usually not enough for the visa application to be processed. If getting denied is a concern of you we have plans with a very short minimum duration which can be terminated early (while most plans have a minimum duration of one year). Just talk to us and we’ll find the right solution for you.

Can I cancel my health insurance if I leave the visa country early?

Sure, if you return back to your home country where you have another health insurance (e.g. eligibility for a public statutory insurance) then your international health insurance contract can be terminated.
