In the recent months PassportCard – in particular their German entity PassportCard Deutschland GmbH – became quite popular in the European digital nomads community. PassportCard comes from Isreal and is a subsidiary of the David Shield group. From there they brought something very innovative to the health insurance market: A MasterCard as their clients card.

Pros

The MasterCard
Definitely a unique and customer friendly feature: No prepayments and lengthy fights for claims. You pay with the customer card at the clinic right away, upload a picture of the invoice and you’re done.
Company plans available
If you run your location independent business through a European legal entity (like a GmbH in Germany or an OÜ in Estonia) you can establish the health insurance contract for yourself (and your team-mates) through your company for even more attractive rates.

Cons

Not an insurer
PassportCard is only managing the contract, contract partner is an association.
The insurer behind the offering is (currently) Allianz (AWP).
Indirect contract situation
The insurance contract is not concluded with the insurer directly. In case of bankruptcy of PassportCard Deutschland GmbH (or dissolution of the association) you will be without coverage.
Young company
Many basic processes are not yet established to the industry’s standard.

Mid-term nomads with a scope of 10 to 20 years into their nomadic lifestyle
Especially in an age range between 20 and 40 this is a sufficient plan (not anymore later in life).
Nomads with destinations mainly in Europe, South East Asia and Africa
PassportCard offers a competitive and flexible price level in these regions.
Entrepreneurs with a legal entity in Europe (like an Estonian OÜ)
You can run your health insurance through your legal entity (for yourself, your dependents and your team) for more attractive premiums. Depending on your jurisdiction this is regarded business expenses.

Not ideal for

Short-term nomads with a plan to come back home within 2 to 5 years
There are cheaper options through long-term travel insurance plans (e.g. ProTrip World, HanseMerkur and others).
Long-term nomads who made a life decision for location independence
We should rather talk about long-term coverage with a contract directly with an insurer (like Allianz, AXA, Globality, Foyer) and maybe even ageing reserves (like Barmenia, SDK).
Nomads with destinations mainly in the Americas and South Western Asia
These pricing zones are more expensive with PassportCard than with their competitors.

Things you should consider when signing with PassportCard:

PassportCard itself is not the insurer but an MGA (managing general agent). While the insurer here is an entity of the Allianz corporation your contract will not be concluded directly with the insurer. Instead it’s a rather complex structure with an Association in between. This brings some additional risks for potentially life-long contracts like a health insurance coverage.
PassportCard offers the option to conclude the contract through their phone agents. We strongly advise against this procedure as it has proven highly fault-prone: The documentation of mentioned and included pre-existing conditions, agreements about the correct premium and all kind of individual exclusions is not putting you as a client in a strong position (while the counterpart sits in the recording of the call and refuses to disclose it). We recommend to rather go the classic route of the application form (we assist with filling it correctly).
